All you fellow scribes out there, I’m sure you can totally relate! Have you ever become so indulged and invested in a character you created and you wished you could make them real or at least be able to interact with them? Well, Leo Martino in Marisa Romanov is a crime writer who falls madly in love with his key character and here we unfold the story on how #MarisaRomanov becomes real in this saga of Love.Obsession.Sacrifice….New Life.
Marisa Romanov started in 2000 as a 9 minute short that I wrote/produced/directed that was shot on Super 16mm Film and grabbed the attention of critics when it was accepted in the Official Shorts Selection at the 2001 La Biennale di Venezia (Venice Film Festival) and won Audience Choice. The LA Times was present at the festival and wrote that Marisa Romanov was among their “Top 3 favorite films”. Later Marisa Romanov was accepted to screen at an alternate selection during the 2001 Berlin Film Festival where it was chosen as the Audience Pick among 50 other short films at the screening. I sent a copy of the original Marisa Romanov to a contact at Paramount Pictures, she was the Director of Creative Affairs at the time and after watching with her colleagues, Danica told me I need to do something with it as this project would get me to be a “Filmmaker to watch”. My music score by the amazing Fabrizio Castania and Andrea Ferrari made a top feature story in an Italian paper during its festival run in 2001. As a short you are never sure the direction it can go, but I knew I had an amazing story, just based on the feedback alone and hence I’ve had several scenarios swirling in this writers head since. Now over 10 years later, I finally have my answer and a kick butt story arc for Marisa to be reborn into a television series! Which brings you to date with the present. Welcome to my 14 year old #PassionProject!
So, here we are…we just wrapped last month the reboot of the original short which now is the first 9 minutes of the pilot episode for the series with a new cast and crew. I miss shooting on film, but due to cost we shot on 1080p HD. We just got our funding for the full pilot and we are finalizing details with major meetings with top production companies and studios to work with as this project comes to fruition. The final cut of this reboot/Sizzle reel for the pilot is almost complete and will be handed off this weekend to Fabrizio and Andrea to reprise their roles as composers.
The original story is just the beginning…the inspiration and a story arc and new characters are introduced into wide array of interweaving plot twists taking you from the 1940s to the present to the near future and back again; unfolding a beautifully told crime drama/noir/romance mixed with fantasy.
Here is a teaser EPK: (Cast Roles may change as this was shot as a Reboot and a Sizzle for the series upon request of the studio executives, much of the sizzle cast is being packaged into the series).
